Student Travel Agencies

Introduction

Students with an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) are entitled to discounted travel fares from special student travel agencies, such as STA Travel. You should contact a travel agent as soon as possible to maximize your chance of getting the lowest possible fares. There is no charge to visit or call a travel agent. However, not all travel agents handle special student fares and they sell out quickly.

Some questions to ask your travel agent in order to get the lowest airfare that is still best for your plans:

  • Does flying into or out of a different city (near my intended destination) make a difference in cost?
  • If it fits your travel plans, ask about the cost of airfare for arriving in one overseas city and departing from another, which could save the cost of backtracking (e.g. flying into London and out of Rome).
  • Are there lower fares on certain days of the week?
  • Is there a price difference between direct flights vs. flights with stopovers?
  • Does length of stay matter (even a few days can make a difference)?
  • Does the date make a difference (the cost of flights usually varies greatly depending on the time of the year, known to travel agents as low, shoulder and high seasons)?
  • How soon do I have to pay to lock in this particular fare?
  • Are student/youth/faculty discounts available?

Student/Youth/Faculty Fares

Special low cost fares are available for students, teachers, youth under age 26, senior citizens, young children and military personnel. In order to get the discount fare for students, teachers or youths under 26 offered by STA Travel and other student travel agencies, you must first purchase the appropriate ID card. Applications for the International Student ID Card, Teacher ID Card, and Youth ID Card are available at the U-M International Center. For more information, see our web page International Student ID Cards.
